My acrylic allergy strikes again!
Jan. 18th, 2008 05:39 pmSon of a bitch. D=
About a week after my gallbladder surgery, I started to itch like crazy and had no idea why--around my surgical wounds and on the lower half of my stomach. I mean, I literally itched so bad that last night, I almost woke up screaming because of it. (Cortizone cream wears off in the middle of the night, unfortunately.)
So I decided to go to our health center, and the doctor went "O.o" at the red rash that had developed on my body. (Lower stomach, surgical wounds, and up my sides.) So she ordered some blood tests and took a skin scrape of the rashes, just in case it was some sort of infection (it wasn't).
More than once, everyone mentioned it was interesting how it hadn't of spread to my legs/back. Eventually, the doctor came back with one of the results of my blood tests--my cytokines, which indicate an allergic reaction, were really high. So I tried to think hard of what had only been in contact with the front of my stomach and my sides only.
And then, all at once, it hit me--I was red where the blue prepping solution had been on my body after the surgery! After a Google search, we managed to find that they used DuraPrep, and DuraPrep has anywhere from 1-10% acrylate polymer. And since that stuff seemed to disappear more than washing off, it seems my body absorbed some of it. Although, with such a small amount of acrylate in it, it took forever for my body to react--but when it did react, gaaaaaah.
=\ The worst part is that we told them that I was allergic to most adhesives because there was acrylic in it. Guess they didn't think there'd be any acrylic in, either.
Guh. At least I now have antihistamines and a steroid cream for the itching. I just hope it manages to go away eventually, although one side does seem to be getting better....
